On Ice Communication Vocabulary

Below are a list of commands that players can use to help their teammates.

Man on -
Nearest player makes defenseman aware that the forechecker is right behind him
 
Time
Nearest player makes the defenseman aware there is no immediate danger
 
Play it
Defenseman wants the goalie to play the puck and the defenseman will hold off the forechecker
 
Set It
Defenseman wants the goalie to set the puck
 
Over
Defenseman wants it over to his partner
 
Turn it Up
Defenseman wants his partner to take it up
 
Wheel
Defense wants his partner to take around net hard using net to screen forecheckers
 
Reverse
Defense partner wants the defenseman to reverse the play
 
Chip It
Flip the puck off the boards by opponent to teammate
 
Eat It
No safe play – puck protect until you get help
 
Quick Up
Goalie makes defenseman aware opponents are changing and pass to forwards
 
Middle
Center or Defense partner wants to pass to forward in the middle of the Ice
 
Back
Goalie or defense partner wants player behind his net to pass the puck around the boards the way he came or reverse direction
 
Around
Goalie or defenseman pass the puck around the direction the puck is heading
 
Switch
Change defensive responsibilities on a play
 
Swing
Forwards change lanes
 
With You
Supporting player with puck
 
Out
Gain a zone with getting the puck out
 
In
Dump it
 
Watch It
Going to get hit
 
Drop It
Leave puck
 
Ice It
Dump puck to relieve pressure
 
Block It
Block Shot
 
Get a Man
Everybody takes a player – usually in your end
 
Play the L
Defensive system against 2-3 power play in 5 on 3 situation
 
Play the Triangle
Defensive system in a 5 to 3 against umbrella power play
 
Play the Diamond
System penalty kill against umbrella power play 5 to 4
 
Box It
Defensive penalty kill against 5 to 4 in overload
 
Backdoor
Defend the cross ice pass
